Beat the Heat…

six cups turned over sitting on a dishrack

Air drying your dishes are just one way to beat the heat this summer.

How many times have you said: “Oh! It’s hot out here!” this summer? Sometimes the temperature climbs so high that it feels like you’re in Hawaii as opposed to Dallas.

The easiest way to stay cool in the summer, besides taking a dip in the pool, is to stay within the cool confines of your apartment and let the A/C roll. But there are some other ways to stay cool that don’t involve electricity and can even save you some money.

Here are a few good cool down tips you can use to stay cool:

Hand wash your dishes and let them air dry. Yes, hand washing your dishes and putting them in a dish rack is a throwback, but besides the energy and water that would be saved from not using your dishwasher; you’re also eliminating the heat it gives off, which has been warming up the house as well.

Turn off the Lights. This simple flip of the switch instantly cuts down the heat emitting from that  bulb in your living room, which is interfering with your cool down.

Redecorate.  Play around with some darker curtains to block the sun out, but make sure they’re not so dark that you are totally without light!

There are multiple ways to keep cool this summer without  using the A/C. For help redecorating your space, the Target just a few minutes from Camden Glen Lakes is the perfect place to start!

New Poll: Paying for Peanuts?

Passenger oxygen masks shown deployed onboard ...

Airlines soon to charge for Oxygen supply?

United charging for using the bathroom? Come on! That’s getting a little carried away!

Are you a frequent flyer? How do you feel about all the changes and charges airlines are making these days? I wonder if we should expect to pay for the oxygen before too long!

Just recently I paid $7 on Delta for a box of cheese and crackers! I remember the days when you expected a hot meal to be served on many lengthy flights. Oh how the times have changed!

Do you have a preferred airline? Who gives the best service? Tell us about it here and then share whether or not you pay for the peanuts on the new poll!

Who is Ali with now?...

And I’m not talking about in a good way! Have you been watching The Bachelorette this season?

I’ve only been a fan for a few years, but now this guy named Reality Steve is ruining every season for me. Just when I think it’s getting really good and all heated up, I seem to let my curiosity get the better of me and I end up reading about the ending. I will keep my composure and not let this guy have it! Or should I?

According to Bachelorette Fans, Ali goes home… Are you tempted to read? To click or not to click, that is the question!?! What will you do? Continue to tune in every Monday night as planned? As for me, I will be watching with my DVR so I can skip ahead!

Does Reality Steve need a “reality” check? You decide!

Is the Sun Our Enemy?

Applying sunscreen

Always apply sunscreen before heading out!

Do you think you know all there is to know about being prepared for the Sun’s rays? As Summer arrives, it’s time to turn our eyes out of the direct sunlight and get caught up on some valuable information about protecting our skin while outside and by the pool especially.

Keep in mind that ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B rays (UVA and UVB rays) damage your skin no matter what – even if you don’t get a sunburn.

Too much exposure in the sun leads to:

  • wrinkles
  • skin cancer
  • various skin conditions

Did you know that being fair skinned puts you at a higher risk for skin cancer? As well, so does having light-colored eyes. Who knew? I certainly didn’t!

See the Full List and Get Tips on Skin Cancer Prevention!

What level of sunscreen or sunblock do you use? This weekend I used a 12!

Happy Father's Day Dad!

A little humor goes a long way…

“When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.” -Mark Twain

Checking the bags in

Checking the bags in!

Have you ever gone through the experience of losing your luggage when traveling? If so, are you apprehensive about checking your bags?

Air travel is on the rise once again, but that doesn’t mean the loss of luggage is getting any better. It’s been reported that lost and even damaged bags are the third most common complaints of air travel, following delays and cancellations.

So what can you do to prepare in the event this happens to you? Try these tips:

  • Separate clothing items between several suitcases, making sure each person has a change of clothes among the bags. In the event the airline loses one person’s suitcase, the unlucky one will at least have another outfit to get by on that was packed in the others’ luggage.
  • Save yourself the hassle and check-in time by shipping your luggage ahead to your destination, with services like FedEx, Luggage Concierge or Virtual Bellhop.
  • In the event the baggage tag gets torn off, put your name and address on the inside of your bag as well as the outside and include a copy of your itinerary.

It is important that you know your rights as a passenger in the event an airline loses your luggage. In many cases, you are entitled to compensation but remember to keep track of your expenses.

Has this ever happened to you? What airline has left you in doubt?
