A little humor goes a long way…
“When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.” -Mark Twain

CRIME PREVENTION TIP OF THE MONTH
January 2010 – Someone’s at the door!
Although a lot of residential burglaries are committed by inexperienced thieves who are prone to acting impulsively, most are carried out by professional criminals who tend to “case a joint” first. They will not usually break into a house or apartment without first making an assessment of what potential targets are inside and when is the best time to strike. In a lot of cases, residents unwittingly make it easier on the thieves by inviting them inside to look around or by opening the door sufficiently to allow a thief to peruse what is inside. That is why it is so important not to open your door for solicitors or, for that matter, any strangers. While most solicitors are honest people just trying to make a living, burglars often use this guise to find good targets. On a more serious note, robbers often use the same ruse, and many home invasions occur after the resident opens the door. Remember: You are much safer behind a locked door, and you are under no obligation to invite anyone into your home. Please protect yourself—better safe than sorry.
Here are some things you can do to enhance your security:
• Use the peephole, and never open your door for any stranger.
• Even if you are expecting a visitor, use the peephole to make certain that the person at your door is the person you are expecting. Never assume; always verify.
• Do not ignore strangers. A stranger at your door must know that someone is at home, or he or she may think that the coast is clear to break into your apartment. Always make your presence known.
• Do not open the door—not even a crack. Door chains are not security devices, and we recommend that you do not use them. Keep the door closed, deadbolts engaged, and talk through the door if necessary.
• Do not let young children answer the door because they can be easily tricked into opening the door for a stranger.
• Be very wary of any uninvited sales or repair person. Legitimate sales and repair people should have an appointment.
• Even if you have a sales or repair appointment, there is nothing wrong with asking a person to wait outside your door while you call his or her employer for verification.
• Assuming that you have a monitored intrusion alarm, which we do recommend whenever feasible, make sure that your system has a panic function that can quickly signal the monitor to call the police. All alarm keypads should have this capability, and some can be equipped with a remote trigger. Discuss this option with your alarm company.
• If you feel threatened, trust your instincts and call the police. Keep an eye through the peephole; let the stranger know that you are calling the police, and do not open the door until the police arrive.
• Make sure that you have renter’s insurance and that your coverage is sufficient. We hope that you are never burglarized, but if you are, good insurance will minimize your loss.
As you know, there is nothing that anyone can do to guarantee that you will never be the victim of a crime, but if you follow the above recommendations, you will reduce your risk substantially. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
